Masonic Books and Resources

Here’s a list of recommended Masonic Books and Resources that will be useful for all Master Masons currently working their way through the Offices in their Lodge. It’s not a definitive list by any means, but is based on the books in my small Masonic library. Feel free to comment below and add your own thoughts, or drop me an email, robert@in-the-chair.co.uk.

100 Days to Learn Masonic Ritual by Robert Bone

The book is based on my blog of 100 days when I was preparing to go in the Chair of my Lodge in the Province of Berkshire. However, it’s not been simply cut and pasted. Each lesson has been completely revised and edited – taking the benefits of hind-sight into account – to ensure you have the maximum opportunity to make the best out of your own year in the Worshipful Master’s Chair of your Lodge.

You only need to put in 10 to 20 minutes work per day, but during the 100 days you will be fully prepared for your Installation ceremony, as well as have a very good knowledge of the First, Second and Third Degree ceremonies that you’ll likely be performing during your term.

It also has a section covering methods of learning the Ritual, and varies hints, tips and techniques to help you along the way.

Although primarily designed to assist the Master Elect for their coming year in the Chair, it is invaluable for any Master Mason who is looking to work their way through the offices in their Lodge.

This is a great book that I’ve taken a lot of inspiration from when creating my 100 Day Study Plan. The book covers many techniques for learning ritual and gives examples. I particularly like the planning and breaking the learning process down into stages.

I strongly recommend reading this book as soon as you can, don’t wait until you’re Master Elect before reading this book.

This is a small ‘handbook’ style book, but packs in a lot of information about “Memory Aids for Masonic Rituals”.

The book can be a bit heavy going in places and I recommend it is read once you start learning the Ritual and get some familiarity with it, and then introduce this book when you realise there is a mountain in front of you to climb.

The reason I suggest this is because the book teaches you to recognise patterns in the Ritual, and memory techniques or saying things in the right order, and personally found you need that familiarity with the Ritual to give the examples context, enabling you to to apply the lessons elsewhere. Of course, this is my personal view, so don’t delay as you may find it better to jump straight in as soon as possible.
